Spittlebug - Nymph Prosapia bicincta (Say).

This insect is present in most bermuda pastures in South Carolina. At times, it is very damaging to Coastal bermuda.

The spittle masses which contain the nymphs are more frequently noticed than the adult spittlebug. This bubbly liquid completely surrounds the nymph and produces a constant moist environment.

The nymph derives its nourishment from plant sap. The greatest damage is done in the nymphal stage. Winter is passed in the egg stage. It takes from 40 to 52 days to complete the life cycle.

Damaged grass appears yellow at first and then turns brown. At times, the stand may be destroyed, but usually the grass is stunted rather than killed.
