It causes injury to soybeans by puncturing the stems, sucking sap, and laying eggs. These punctures may girdle the stem. The adults also feed on alfalfa, beans, cowpeas, tomatoes, melons, and other plants.
They are present in most fields in South Carolina; however, very little damage has been noticed. In other states they have caused serious damage. They overwinter in weed patches and other vegetation around the field.
