The small white eggs (1/24 inch long) can be seen against a dark background. Eggs are fastened by the moth among cloth threads and do not readily shake off. Eggs hatch from 4 days to 3 weeks. Feeding larvae normally spin a case. This case is fastened to the food material as opposed to the portable case of the case-making clothes moth.
Larvae may molt over 40 times and often become inactive for extended periods (8-24 months). Thus the larval stage may require from 1 month to 2 years. Pupating larvae spin a pupal case about 1/4 inch long and emerge as moths in 2-6 weeks. Adults normally live 2-4 weeks with females dying upon completion of egg laying.
