Furniture Carpet Beetle. Anthrenus flavipes (Lec.)

The adult and larva and typical damage to woolen cloth are shown in this photo.

The life cycle (from egg to adult) varies from 149 to 422 days. Normally each female will lay from 30-100 eggs which hatch in about 3 weeks. This insect overwinters as the adult, and no eggs are laid in cold weather except in heated buildings. The larval stage requires 112-378 days and evolves through 6 to 12 instars. The adults may emerge as early as March in South Carolina.
