53rd Annual Meeting Minutes
Annual Meeting of the South Carolina Entomological
Society
Business Meeting President Eric Benson called the meeting to
order. Historian Mike Hood gave the invocation and the lunch blessing. Dr. Bruce Martin of the PeeDee REC welcomed the members and thanked Francis
Reay-Jones for making the meeting arrangements. He discussed developments at the
REC including a new plant technology program that will require the eventual
hiring of 10 new staff members. Benson asked for any corrections to the last
annual meeting minutes. Randy McWhorter moved the minutes be accepted as
written, Hood seconded the motion. The minutes were accepted. Executive
Director's Report
McWhorter presented the current
incorporation documents from the state as well as the framed original 1955 document
of incorporation for the society to Historian Mike Hood to be hung in the Clemson
Entomology Department conference room.

Historian's Report McWhorter moved that the Society support the
publication of this article by paying 50% of costs. Gerald Carner seconded the
motion. Ed Farnsworth recommended covering all of the publication costs.
McWhorter explained that there were some restrictions of the funds. A vote on
the original motion passed unanimously on a voice vote. Long Range Planning
Committee Carner recommended the
long term committee report be put on the website and he asked that members
comment on the report. JAUE Committee Tom Shanower has stepped down as editor. James Austin of
Texas A&M has taken on the editorship. He is very interested in urban
entomology. The Society still needs to discuss the future directions of the
journal‹going digital. This will cost quite a bit up front, but may reduce
publication costs in the long term. Carner stated that catching up the
publication should be a priority. Benson said that most of the effort on the
journal in the past year has focused on finding an editor. He said he will meet
with the former editor and some subject editors at the national ESA meeting to
discuss going electronic.
New Business
Nominations from the floor for VP/President Elect and Secretary were requested.
Since there were no nominations Carner moved to close nominations and accept
those of Francis-Reay Jones and Laurie Reid, respectively for the 2 offices.
Zungoli seconded. The motion was approved and the 2 elected unanimously. The
date and site of the next annual meeting were discussed. McWhorter said that
there may be a joint meeting with the North Carolina Entomological Society so
perhaps the site should be closer to North Carolina like rock Hill. If the
Society meets with Georgia then that meeting will be in the spring possibly in
2009. Jeremy Greene said that Georgia was interested in doing a bioblitz
associated with their meeting. Zungoli recommended putting students on the
arrangements and program committees and perhaps members of related organizations
as well. Benson reminded members that the president of the Clemson Entomology
Club is an ad hoc member of the SCES board. Dustin Swanson moved that the
Society donate $100 to the Entomology Club. The motion passed. Benson
thanked McWhorter, Greene, and Reay-Jones for their hard work on the meeting this
year recognizing that the bioblitz took a lot of extra work. He stated that
McWhorter has worked diligently on changing investments to earn more interest for
the Society. He thanked contributors and the members who contacted them.
Benson welcomed members of Palmetto Insect Naturalists and South Carolina
Association of Naturalists to the meeting. Benson mentioned accomplishments of
the past year including having a new editor and subject editors for the journal
and changing the website. Richard Reeves moved and Zungoli seconded that the
Society send a letter of thanks to the web designer, Cerice Benson. The motion
passed. Benson also commended Hood for the production of the history
manuscript.
Benson adjourned the 53rd annual business meeting.

A meeting of the
membership of the South Carolina Entomological Society was held at 11:00 am on
October 4, 2007 at the Clemson PeeDee Research and Extension Center near
Florence. A quorum was present.
Executive Director Randy McWhorter welcomed visitors to the
meeting including Lynn Smith and Janet Ciegler of Palmetto Insect Naturalists and
South Carolina Association of Naturalists, Andrew Gosnell of the South Carolina
Governors School, Laurie Reid of the South Carolina Forestry Commission, Ed
Farnsworth a new adjunct faculty member at Clemson, and Said El Salamouny
Fulbright Scholar at the Clemson Coastal Research and Extension Center. He also
thanked individual and corporate contributors to the society. Jay Chapin
requested and received a $1000 donation from Resource Seed Company. Jeremy
Greene contacted Cheminova, UPI, Chemtura and AMVAC. A total of $2915 was
contributed to the Society this year.
Chairman Jeremy
Greene discussed the meeting program which includes 9 student papers, 8 non
student papers, 5 posters (3 of which are students'). The symposium on
biodiversity will be this afternoon followed by the society's first bioblitz.
Benson added that here are evaluation forms in the registration packet and asked
that attendees turn the forms in so that the meetings can be improved. He
recognized the hard work by Greene on assembling the program.
Chairman Francis Reay-Jones reviewed the meetings meal
arrangements and welcomed questions. He offered to help with any needs attendees
might have.
Merle Shepard presented the nominations
for Chairman D. Michael Jackson. They were: Francis-Reay Jones for president
and Laurie Reid for secretary.
Chairman Shepard stated that the
society is on very solid ground financially with a total worth of $81,796. Most
of this is invested. Interest for 2006 was $3170.
Pat
Zungoli reported that the awards will be announced tomorrow. She also thanked
the judges selected to judge presentations.
McWhorter
reported that membership was down slightly‹now there are 87 members (down 6
from last year), 49 agency memberships (down 2), and 15 international
subscribers.
Alvin Simmons said that this year's
program is more exciting than ever. He has contacted Clemson News for dispersal
of meeting information. Peter Kent from Clemson's PSA department is here to
cover the bioblitz.
There were no resolutions.
Mike Hood's manuscript on the first 50 years of the
Society will be published in the next issue of the journal. He expressed hopes
that the article will heighten appreciation of the Society and suggest ideas for
the future development.
Carner recognized the members of the committee including Eric
Benson, Randy McWhorter, Merle Shepard, and Francis-Reay Jones. The committee
was established in 2003. The members reviewed the operation and future of the
Society and made 6 recommendations. These recommendations have been the basis
for discussion of long term planning each meeting year.
1. Expand
the membership base. The membership base is critical. The base has expanded,
but the number of members has dropped. Zungoli challenged each member to get one
other person to join and proposed that the person bringing in the most new
members be formally acknowledged.
2. The Society should reach a broader
audience. Thirty-thousand persons listen to the Clemson Radio program Got Bugs
every other week. There is a lot of interest in the general public and the
society and profession could benefit with more outreach programs. He also
encouraged the Society to continue interacting with other entomology and
naturalists groups.
3. Incorporate new activities at the meetings. We
have done this through symposia, workshops, and now the bioblitz.
4.
Improve communications. The committee recommended publishing a newsletter.
5. Clarify committee responsibilities. The Society needs a manual of
committees and responsibilities. This is in the works.
6. Reassess
support for the journal. Only 43 of the current members are in-state. The
others are members mainly because they subscribe to the journal. Society
membership would swindle rapidly without the journal.
McWhorter stated that the journal is
still behind in publication and submission of manuscripts has been very slow. We
are now 1 year and 1 issue behind. He is getting inquiries from subscribers
about the backlog.
Melvin marks was recognized as a
new member from the Charleston area. Jonathan Cammack and Elizabeth Burdel were
recognized as new student members. All students attending the meeting were
welcomed. Don Manley, recently retired, was recognized and welcomed.

Awards Luncheon
President Eric Benson welcomed members to the awards
luncheon. He asked for recommendations to the board for meeting sites next
year. He presented a check for $100 to Richard Reeves President of the Clemson
Entomology Club. Benson read a plaque commemorating the service of Tom
Shanower as editor of the journal.
Awards
Pat Zungoli, chairperson of the
Awards Committee presented the awards. She expressed appreciation to the
students presenting papers. The undergraduate award of $100 for a poster
presentation went to Sherri Wegner and Cassie Smith's joint display which was accepted by Dr. Joseph Culin, Department Head ESPS in their behalf. The graduate student poster award
went to Richard Reeves. Awards for presentations went to: Andrew Gosnell for
the high school category, Angela Gomez undergraduate, Dustin Swanson graduate
student, and Juang-Horng Chong non-student. All except the non-student award
included $100 as well as a certificate.
The J.H. Cochran Memorial Scholarship Award was presented to Ian Stocks. He is a Ph.D. student of John Morse. He has spent 3 years as an insect diagnostician and gives tours of the insect museum. He has been a good ambassador for the profession and Clemson. He was awarded and plaque and a check for $1000.
Resolutions Committee
Paula Mitchell,
chairperson of the Resolutions Committee, offered the following resolution to the
membership:
Whereas our 53rd annual meeting has been a great success;
Therefore, be it resolved; that we thank the staff of the PeeDee Research and
Education Center, the program and local arrangements committees, the poster,
paper and symposium presenters, and especially the Bioblitz organizers and
participants for their hard work and effort.
The resolution was unanimously approved by the membership.
President's Comments
Benson discussed the
accomplishments of the Society over the past year including the new website, new
journal editor, the good financial state, and Mike Hood's history manuscript. He
thanked the executive board, Francis Reay-Jones and the members of the local
arrangements committee, Jeremy Greene and the program committee. He thanked
secretary Dwight Williams and Executive Director Randy McWhorter for his hard
work.
At this point Merle Shepard and Mike Hood escorted Vice-president/President-elect Jeremy Greene to the front of the room. Benson presented the gavel to Greene. Greene recognized the service of Benson to the Society. He presented Benson a plaque commemorating his service.
Greene adjourned the meeting.
