Household and Structural Urban Entomology
is a broad area encompassing insect pest problems in and around structures
used by people. It is supported by research, teaching, and extension activities
at Clemson University. It is not concerned only with urban areas, but
also
with pest problems that people incur in and around their homes, work places,
or places of leisure. Research and extension activities in this area of
entomology may involve cockroaches, fleas, carpenter
ants, fire
ants, stored
products pests, ticks,
biting flies, filth
flies, wood destroying insects such as termites,
or other pest problems that are usually considered non-agricultural.
In South Carolina the pest control industry is estimated to represent revenues of approximately $100 million annually and employs nearly 4,000 people who in turn provide services for many of the 3.6 million residents of the state. Termite control alone is estimated to cost the consumer in South Carolina approximately $31.9 million and that does not begin to consider the cost of damage and repair. Our laboratories collaborate with other university and industry scientists throughout the Southeast in seeking answers to solve problems in urban entomology for South Carolina. Urban entomology potentially impacts all citizens of the state and their quality of life. Urban Entomology Research Laboratories |
